Examples of Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing Solutions in Action!

Avnet Computer Marketing, a distributor of enterprise systems, software, networking and storage products, tested Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing after dismissing consumer-grade instant messaging as insecure.

In an innovative move, Avnet linked instant messaging to its customer relationship management (CRM) system. When a new customer is added to its CRM database, a buddy list of the customer’s sales team and contact details are dynamically generated for each of the buddy list members. Enhancing the customer’s experience through real-time contact with the sales team. Avnet’s sales team uses application sharing to remotely train customers by easily selecting a customer’s name from the buddy list.

With a need to reduce growing travel costs, Ingersoll Rand—an industrial and construction equipment company—purchased 10,000 licenses for Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Lotus Sametime). Ingersoll Rand was particularly interested in conferencing functionality—whiteboarding, application sharing and video conferencing.

A Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing pilot program had been in place for six months without any real internal promotion. But already about 1,000 users had installed and started using it on their own.

“It was the first time I had seen anything like it,” says Todd Dahlberg, Ingersoll Rand e-Collaboration project manager. “Usually you meet with resistance when you try to get people to use new software; all the initiative comes from IT. Here the users were coming to the software. Lotus [Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing] marketed itself.”

And Avnet hosts instant messaging for its customers, helping improve customer satisfaction. While introducing Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing, Avnet’s communication culture began to change. Today, before placing telephone calls, associates use presence awareness to check the availability of the people they want to call. Helping reduce wasted time and cutting the cost of unnecessary calls.
